ABOUT THE NEIGHBOURHOOD PROJECT
A practical leadership program to make community-led placemaking easier for everyone.
The Neighbourhood Project is a practical program to make community-led placemaking easier by removing road blocks and by creating a replicable model that can be used by communities everywhere.
Over 80% of Australia’s population lives in cities – and like cities around the world, they’re growing fast. The neighbourhoods we build today will last for generations.
While it’s easy for planners and developers to create buildings, streets and parks (the hardware), shaping places with soul, character and identity (the software) is harder. It requires communities to be actively involved. Currently our system makes it difficult for communities to lead, and leaders with great ideas struggle to know where to begin.
We can change this. The Neighbourhood Project strengthens local community and government leadership, and provides practical skills in placemaking and governance. This empowers you to find innovative solutions to local problems, and drives sustainable places that people love and feel connected to.
Join us to see how a single project in your area can drive long-term systemic change in process improvements behind the scenes.
The Neighbourhood Project creates impact through three areas of innovation.
Creating an enabling environment for community action by reducing red tape, making it easier to get things done, more often.
Strengthening local leaders and empowering local groups to take action to improve their neighbourhood.
Transforming local spaces into socially connected and inclusive places.
HOW IT WORKS
The Neighbourhood Project helps you achieve change with leadership training for council and community, community-led delivery, and strategic consulting to embed innovations.
This runs as a practical three month bootcamp, helping local ideas grow into thriving places supported by communities in the long term. At the same time, local governments and urban managers receive strategic consulting, mentoring, and access to leadership networks.
This creates support for community-led placemaking in council culture, process and policy; supports community leadership and confidence to run neighbourhood projects; and puts neighbourhood-level public spaces to work supporting resilience and social cohesion.

A practical three-month community leadership program helps get community-led placemaking projects off the ground. Applications to the bootcamp are based on an open EOI which runs twice a year.
